Tier 4 (Student) visa
The new Tier 4 Student points-based scheme replaces the old student visa scheme. Tier 4 students can only study full-time courses (of at least 15 hours per week) and can study either degree-level courses or courses below degree level. They must be enrolled in a college or university which is registered on the Tier 4 sponsor licence register.
When an applicant applies for Tier 4 status they must show that they have enrolled on a suitable course, and the college/university must provide appropriate documentation to prove this. Applicants must also show that they have sufficient funds at their disposal to live adequately in the UK. The required amount of funds depends on whether the course is being taught in inner London or outside inner London and the length of the course.
Tier 4 Students are allowed to work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) during term time and full-time during college holidays.
It is possible for applicants to apply to “switch” into Tier 4 Student status from Student status under the old rules without returning to their home country. It is also possible for applicants to apply to switch into other visa categories from Tier 4 status if they meet the relevant requirements.
